9/9/19
Happy Monday! We had a good short week in third grade! The class completed the MAP Assessment which we take three times a year. In third grade we assess math, reading, and language growth. The goal is to see growth and the assessment helps teachers to plan intervention instruction for your child. Today (Monday) we will be benchmarking students to assess their current reading levels. In the past, all students were benchmarked, however starting in the third grade we benchmark only students who are below or on the bubble with Fountas and Pinnell reading level guide. This assessment gives us further details to help with interventions.
Math: We have finished chapter one on place value and rounding. The next chapter will focus on adding three and four digit numbers with regrouping. We will continue to review place value and rounding as there are still some students who need extra support in this area.
For each math unit we take a pre-assessment, set goals for our learning targets, and then at the end of the unit we look to see if we met our goal. I keep all tests attached to the students goal sheets and will show them to you during conferences.
Reading: The last two weeks we have been working on asking and answering questions about the text we are reading. Students are doing a nice job. Our next unit will be summarizing stories and using the story elements to identify the lesson the author is trying to teach us. This will lead up to our Pumpkin Book Report assignment that will be assigned at the end of September. Please be looking for directions that will be coming home soon.
Grading: We attempt to grade within the week, however we do not always put all grades in the grade book. If your child is missing assignments, they will be listed as missing and a 0 will be placed in the score. As soon as that assignment is turned in and graded, the grade will be updated. If your child is absent, they have 2 days to get missing work turned in. I gather assignments and have them waiting on their desks when they return to school.
You can always check your child’s grades on Skyward. Please check their binder and planners frequently. Students are circling any assignments that they have not completed during the day (that is our hope anyway...we don’t always get to see all the planners as we are packing!).
Facebook Page: Please join our facebook group if you have not already. We share pictures for the week, upcoming events, test reminders, and many other things! It is a great way to communicate and see what is happening in our classroom.
