We are at a good stopping point in our reading basal series, and I have some geography and country lessons that I would like to replace in our traditional reading time over the next couple of weeks. Since I will not be using our basal reader I will not be giving the class spelling lists for the last couple of weeks before the break. This way I can keep our vocabulary, phonics, and spelling all consistent with the reading story once we return to class after the break. So...hip, hip, hooray! No spelling the rest of the year!
In grammar this week we have learned about idioms. The kiddos love idioms and trying to figure out their literal meaning. Ask them to share some with you, or quiz them and ask them what the meaning of the following sentences.
Those girls are two peas in a pod.
When Michael gave the answer to the math question, he hit the nail on the head.
Man! It's raining cats and dogs.
We had fun illustrating and writing sentences using idioms similar to these above this week.
On the last day of school, December 16th, we will have a pajama day as we will be finishing a two week Polar Express unit. On that day we will watch the Polar Express and drink hot chocolate.
On December 15 all third grade classes will be traveling far and wide to visit many different countries and learn about their holiday traditions as part of our geography unit. The classes will travel to each of the teachers that day and learn about a different country in each continent. They will get to make a small craft representative of a holiday tradtion. It is a fun and informative day.
This will probably be my last blog for the year. I will touch base with all of you once school is back in session after Christmas. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
